Fate already chose them. Garrett needs Sydney to choose him.
It wasn't she is my Mate anymore. That part was settled, immovable, true as gravity.
It was: I want her to choose it.
He could ask her tomorrow. Dragon tradition, if he were being honest with himself, would say they should have completed the Mating Ceremony months ago– bond and blood and vow all sealed together the way his kind had done it for thousands of years.
But Garrett didn't care what tradition said, because Sydney Kavanaugh had spent her entire existence being told what she was.
The Special One. Chosen by Prophecy before she'd taken her first breath. Chosen by Kara. Chosen by the Universe, by missions, by responsibilities that had never once asked her permission before landing on her shoulders.
Garrett refused– refused– to become one more thing life simply handed her. Something– or someone– she had to take care of.
He wanted this to be different.
He wanted, more than he'd wanted almost anything in his very long life of wanting things, for there to come a day when Sydney looked at him and chose him.
Freely. Completely.
Not because a Bond compelled it, not because a Prophecy expected it, not because it was simply the next assigned step in a life built entirely out of assigned steps.
Just because she wanted to.
And until that day came, he would wait.
I know it's not October yet, but I just couldn't resist! 😉

LOOK WHAT'S COMING IN OCTOBER!

TRICK OR TREAT FOR THE DEAD DRAGON?
Well, I've got 3 for you!!
CHECK THESE OUT!
❤️❤️❤️
They start after Maisie MacDonald has just wandered somewhere she absolutely should not be—and discovered that the Dragon standing in front of her is Knox MacAllen. Texas Ranger. Dragon Guardsman. And, according to everyone else in the world, dead for the last hundred years...
“How did you get in here?”
I blinked, then scoffed, “I walked.”
Knox’s jaw tightened. He clearly thought I was being an insufferable smartass. It was written all over his gorgeous face.
“Through the Wards?”
“Yep.”
“Impossible.”
My temper immediately flared. Who the hell did he think he was? Slamming my hand to my hip, I huffed, “Okay, Dead Guy, I don’t know what to tell you. I put one Doc Marten in front of the other and walked right through.”
“Don’t call me Dead Guy.”
“Stop being dead for a hundred years, and we’ll revisit it.”
A flicker of pure, unadulterated exasperation crossed Knox’s face. I almost laughed, but bit the inside of my cheek to stop it. Yes, I was being a brat, but the dude was pushing all my buttons—and I knew he wasn’t done.
Without another word, he turned on his heel and marched toward the shimmering, purple geometric patterns pulsing in the air.
“They hit back,” I warned, crossing my arms and staying exactly where I was.
Of course, Knox gave me a classic, arrogant Dragon Guardsman look over his shoulder, entirely unconvinced that a barrier could hold someone as powerful.
Who was I to argue? I decided to let him have his moment.
I watched as he raised a heavy, armored hand to reach out and touch the translucent line while holding my breath.
And just like that…
BAM! CRACKLE!
Sparks exploded violently. Knox didn’t go flying back into the dirt as I had, but the concussive force was massive enough to force him to jerk his hand back violently. Oh! And there was smoke curling from his gauntlet.
Naturally, I smirked, leaning against my rock blockade. “Told you.”
Knox glared at his hand, then back at me. When he spoke, his voice was so tight that I wondered how he actually got the words out.
“You could’ve been more specific.”
“I said they hit back. How much more specific did you need? Do you want a spreadsheet?”
***
The instant his skin touched mine, the world turned upside-down, inside-out, and did The Twist as an encore.
Knox looked at the glowing air, then met my eyes, his voice deadpan. “It is literally sparkling.”
Not to be deterred, I lifted my chin aggressively, refusing to back down.
“It’s tactical sparkle.”
***
“This isn’t corruption.”
“Then what is it?”
Neysa went terrifyingly still. “A tether.”
“A what?”
“No,” Neysa snarled. “It’s worse.”
“What the hell is worse than a tether?”
“A beacon,” she breathed.
And don't forget about these!
